I’ve gotten asked this question time and time again, just how do you do it? How did you get your blog started? Etc. So I thought this would be a good post to write. There’s really no “become a blogger overnight” quick scheme to tell you, in fact I started blogging in 2009. That’s a REALLY long time ago y’all, I also may have just aged myself. HA! Back then it was on Blogger and Instagram wasn’t a thing and I relied on Facebook and Pinterest (mainly Pinterest) plus a whole lot of word of mouth to really get people looking at my blog. Though – those social media sites were fairly new and I was just doing my best to figure it all out. HA!
I’ve learned a TON since then and honestly, I really made this a focus and starting earning money I’d say about 6 years ago. If you caught mine and Marcus’ podcast a couple of weeks ago, I actually shared a little behind the scenes of blogging and what it really looks like. For this, I’m more so going to focus on well, things I’ve learned through the years about running my own business. The fails, the successes and well, all the things I’m still learning. It’s no easy task and honestly – I feel like I’m learning new things every, single, day. I’m making errors, changing things up, constantly trying to do better and everything in between.
- TIME: I used to think that the more time I spent on things, the more likelihood it would be that it would work out. I’m not kidding, I would work 12+ hour days, cry at the end of basically everyday and then get super frustrated when things just weren’t working. Marcus would always say, honey I don’t think you need to be burning the candle at both ends like you are. Just pour your heart and soul into one thing and focus on that. Well, no joke after probably two years of doing that, it quickly sank in that, that wasn’t realistic, especially as I was becoming a Mom. I’ve learned that there’s a time and a place for everything and to be honest, sometimes it’s just not the right timing for something to work out, no matter how bad you want it to. Does that mean, don’t work hard – heck no, I still work my butt off, but it means focusing your energy where it matters. Not killing yourself to try and do 20 different things.
- SCHEDULE: This goes hand in hand with the above thing, but has especially rung true since becoming a Mom. I had to learn that a schedule was key. Of course, trial and error is what taught me that after working all the time still, trying to balance being a Mom, staying up until 2AM trying to finish deadlines, etc. And really, somedays that’s just what has to happen, but for the most part I do my best to stick to a schedule. Mornings are mine and Blake’s time, we snuggle, eat breakfast and get errands or things done around the house. Then typically after lunch I’m really diving into work, while she plays (on the days she doesn’t have school and I don’t have a sitter). I work for a few hours, then Marcus rolls in at some point and we have some family time and do our thing and Blake goes to bed. Then once, she’s down I usually hop on to do more work for a bit, then settle down and have some husband time before bed. Now that sounds like a dream world, it’s not – it’s honestly chaotic in between and during all of that. Not to mention, I’m on my phone for a huge chunk of the day since well, that’s my job 😉 But I’ve set hours, down time, etc. where the phone is away and I’m just a mom. I also have help – I didn’t always, it had to come, but when it’s a possibility – don’t be afraid to ask for help. Which leads me to my next point…
- HELP: Hire help where you’re able to, ask for help, if you’re married or have family close lean on them. I’ll tell you what without family help and my incredible husband, I wouldn’t be where I am today and I still feel like I have a lot to learn and a long way to go. That’s one thing I’ve really learned, for so long I thought (and honestly had to because of money) do things on my own. But when I made help a priority that’s when things really shifted for me. Obviously be smart, but also remember your sanity is important too.
- LEARNING: You’re constantly going to be learning, changing and making errors. It’s not a big deal. I don’t like to call them “fails” because well, you learn from things so are they really “failures”? Not in my opinion. Don’t ever think you have all the knowledge in something, you might have a lot, but there’s always more to learn. Don’t be afraid to learn more, to grow and to develop as a person and a business owner. There’s a lot to know and honestly, I still don’t know the half of it.
Overall, the biggest thing I’ve learned is support and family is huge, asking for help is a must and well, giving yourself a little grace (everyday) is so important. We are all trying to figure things out, business owner or not and well, we’re doing the best we can. Remember, you’re not failing, things take time and they’re not going to happen over night, in fact I’m a big believer in trusting in God and I’ll tell you what, his timing is the best timing – even if it’s not always when and how you want it to be.
