We love watermelon around here during the summer and by we I mean, Blake and Marcus. 😉 HA! I like it too, but not like they do. In fact fun story – Blake calls it “water-lemon” and I’m not sure I’ll ever correct her because it’s the cutest freaking thing ever. ANYWAYS, since we eat it often over here, I’ve found some fun ways to eat it, easy ways to cut it and well. my best tips and tricks to keeping the juice somewhat under control because y’all know – the juicier the better, but that also means a mess.
Watermelon is just one of those fruits that is seriously perfect for on the go, easy for parties and friends over and just all around a good fruit. Watermelon.org actually has a TON of different ways you can take watermelon on the go all the way from cubes to infusing it in water! Which fun fact, did you know watermelon is the best value in the produce section among fruit at only 17 cents per serving. (*2017 Watermelon Purchase Survey, conducted by MyPoints.com. Inc, August 2007). Also you can use the entire watermelon for things – like the WHOLE thing! Wellll my trick is what we call “watermelon pops” in our house. It’s basically watermelon on a stick – but there’s a little more to it just to keep it fun, cool and well less messy.
What you’ll need is:
- +popsicle sticks (or kabob sticks work well too)
- Toppings or sprinkles if you’re feelin’ fun 😉
The how to:
- Start with cutting the watermelon in half and then into small circle slices. Once that’s done you’ll just cut each circle like a pizza or if you’re feelin’ cool Mom status, I’ll sometimes let Blake take a cookie cutter to it for some fun shapes for our watermelon pops.
- Once you have all of it cut, then you’ll just stick the sticks into all of them. This is the part where you can have some fun, add sprinkles, chocolate, whatever. Blake loves to put sprinkles on hers!
- After that I put them in the freezer, either over night or if you’re in a hurry for a couple of hours. This is what REALLY helps the juice. It traps it all in there, but keeps it less messy when you go to eat it (or until it melts ;)).
- Once cold, pull them out and serve or take wherever you’re going!
We love to throw ours in a bag then put them in the cooler for outings like the park or lake. It’s the perfect little way to cool off and it’s still healthy. Plus, any fruit I can get my kid to eat is a huge win for me! Now run over and enter you watermelon recipe into the board’s contest, here.
