I get emails all the time asking questions about running a business, my favorite part, etc. So I decided to make a blog post with the top five questions I get asked.
So follow along & I’ll share my deepest darkest business secrets, HA! Y’all are in for a real treat:
1. How did you start your business?
Seriously I wish I had the perfect story and answer for this, but the reality and truth is, with a LOT of trial & error. Sounds glamorous eh? Well, it sure wasn’t! Here’s how it went down, I had been sewing and writing almost my entire life, like I’ve kept a journal since I was five (which is an entirely different story and my five year old self journal was full of things like “Joey kicked sand at me-it was mean”) and sewing, well that’s definitely evolved too from patchy pieces of fabric making a pillow to our shop today! But anyways, so I had done this my entire life so I said darn it lets put this to use! So I opened an Etsy shop with like four things in it, and welp, it was an epic fail. Like I think I literally sold one thing in four months. At the time I was working at a credit union, and it was a pretty good job, but Marcus and I had been trying to start a family for like a year at that point and I said, darn it this is going to be successful and I’m going to be able to work from home and raise my babies. And nope, not just like that, but I wish! After a few months, more social media marketing than I can count, lots of work and sleepless nights it finally began to grow a little by a little. And I would definitely still consider us small & growing- I mean I’ve got big plans, big goals- I want to go big or go home! So how’s that for an answer? I’m still learning and growing every single day, and the harsh reality is..not everyday is glamorous, but in the end when something, even if it’s little, works out–it makes it ALL worth it!
2. How do you balance work & family?
This is a tough one and I seriously battle with this everyday. I am a bit of a workaholic, like I seriously find joy in working a TON, it’s sick I know..but sometimes that’s definitely a bad thing. While I get a lot done, it drives my husband a little insane. And not only that but my poor house, seriously my POOR house, dishes piled to the ceiling, laundry that has been sitting in the basket for three weeks, and filthy filthy floors and counters…But the last few months I have been trying to figure out a good balance, and my secret: set working hours. It’s hard to set working hours when you work from home and your work is constantly with you either in your house or on your phone, but guess what?! Something that finally made me come to terms with it’s OKAY to stop working is, If you think about all the big businesses out there, they don’t respond to emails ten minutes later, on a Sunday or at 11pm, so why should you? Why should I? I shouldn’t. And this was also super important for me to get in the habit of before baby got here. It’s definitely a work in progress, but I’m telling you it’s so much better to know that at 5:00 I’m done for the night, I can hang with the hubbs, prep for baby & walk little Howie! Also another thing, if you don’t have a planner–I really SUGGEST getting one, my fav is the Simplified Planner by Emily Ley. Seriously it’s amazing and it keeps my chaos organized.
And proof about my dishes? Here you have it, and I’m not even embarrassed. Alright, lies, I am TOTALLY embarrassed, plus there’s my left over cereal bowl from this morning, since there’s no room in the sink. #awkward But we will keep it our little secret right?
3. What’s your favorite part about owning your own business & blog?
Seriously everything! It’s a love hate relationship, but mostly love. I love being able to get up in the morning and stay at home and have meetings at home with a nice top on & my sweatpants (because they can’t see those over Skype) or even better a phone meeting, you don’t even have to put a nice top on or brush your hair. But then again, it’s a little pathetic because it’s so rare that I ever get ready, if my neighbors didn’t know I lived here they would probably think I’m homeless. Let’s be honest they probably still think I am! — but back to the question, it’s just the best, I get to create and do something I love, meet fabulous people & connect with all you lovelies (that’s probably my favorite part meeting all of you!)! But remember it’s not all easy, while I do love it & am so thankful, it’s also a LOT of hard work and time consuming.
4. Any advice to starting a new business or blog?
My advice would be RELAX, as I have only been doing this about a year so I am NO expert, the biggest thing I have learned is to STOP STRESSING. Stop stressing about being the best, making the best, meeting deadlines, everything. There’s absolutely no point. Fact is, things are NOT going to go perfect. You’re going to have the day where you’re in tears because someone was mean, or that headband you’ve been working on for three hours just won’t sew right. The reality, you CAN’T let it get to you. And I know, easier said than done, because let’s be honest my pregnant self cries like everyday right now, but mainly over things like we’re out of oranges and all I want is a dang orange. But seriously, just have fun. And this is advice that I need to take myself on occasion. Just realize that you started this because it’s something you love & keep it that way!
5. Where do you come up with Inspiration?
This is a hard one, and that being because even if you think that you have the most original idea in the world, guarantee nine times out of ten if you type that idea into Google, it’s probably been done before. But that being said, you can definitely have your own ideas and inspiration. Try your hardest to be original and create ideas in YOUR head. I don’t generally recommend looking on Google, it’s distracting and takes away from your own creative thoughts. But my favorite time to think of new ideas is while I am taking a bath or laying in bed at night. Seriously, it’s when I do my best thinking. But again, the main goal is that you’re having fun & not worrying about others. Also, chat it up with others. While my husband is not extremely creative, he is good at telling me if that is not a good idea or if it could be! Who’s seen the movie Baby Mama? It’s like when Tina Fey says she keeps a notepad by her bed and writes down her thoughts, and in the morning will see that she wrote things like “Make Everyone Twins”–that’s definitely not a good idea. Ha!
Well y’all, I hope this was as entertaining as it was writing it. I think I even inspired myself a little. And at the end of the day, grab your favorite mug (because you can’t go wrong with a mug) pour your self something that you love & just RELAX.
HAPPY DAY–Because guess what, tomorrow is FRIDAY!
