Hi guys! Its Ali from Dream Crafter again! Thanks to the amazing Jessica for having me back! Today I’m going to show you how to make your own Boppy cover.
Although my baby boy isn’t due until January, I feel this really big rush to get everything ready. We will be moving into our new home in November, then its my 3 year olds birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, then my parents come and then baby is here! I really only have a few weeks left, to not only pack up my house and prepare myself for all the upcoming holidays, but I have to get ready for a new baby too!
When I started looking at all my old baby stuff, I realized that everything I had…was ugly. Lets face it. A lot of my stuff was hand-me-downs to begin with and since everything has already been through two other babies it has really taken its toll. So I think it was time for a little Boppy update.
Start by choosing your fabric.
You’ll need 1 yard of each fabric. You can really choose just one fabric for both sides but I chose a soft grey minky for one side and the amazing Nate Burkus fabric for the other side. (I couldn’t resist.)
Start by laying out one of the fabrics and placing your old cover (or your Boppy pillow) on top to use as a pattern.
Then cut about a half inch allowance around the outside. Do a larger allowance when you cut if you are using your pillow as the pattern.
Cut both fabrics. Now I have two fabrics cut and ready to go!
You are also going to need a really long zipper. Mine was like 18 inches or something. (Who knows…I suck at measuring things.) I actually got this zipper at a really old hole-in-the-wall sewing place a long time ago and it was PERFECT for this project. Just find a long zipper and if it looks like you could shove a pillow through it…then it will work! 🙂
Get out your sewing machine, coordinating thread and your zipper foot.
Attach the RIGHT side of the zipper to the RIGHT side of your fabric and pin in place.
Sew it in. Then sew the other side of the zipper to the other fabric with both RIGHT sides together.
Now, you see how the zipper looks unfinished? Thats because you need to top stitch it. Top stitching just means you are going to sew over the top of the zipper on the right side of the fabric to secure the fabric enough that it doesn’t get caught in the zipper and it looks nice.
See how much nicer that looks?
Ok now comes the fun part…putting it all together! Flip your cover so that your fabrics are facing RIGHT sides together and sewing around the edges. I used about a quarter inch seem allowance. Be sure that you un-zip the zipper a little before you begin so that when its all together you can open it back up and flip it. 🙂
Just FYI I pinned my fabrics together all the way around to make sure they didn’t shift. Then while its still inside out clip off any extra fabric out side the seam and clip the corners so the rounded parts don’t pucker when its turned right side out.
Flip and put your pillow in!
How fun is this gold zipper?
And the zipper pull! To die for am I right?
And here is one more shot of the super soft backside where I will rest my babes.
Thanks for sticking with me through this very lengthy tutorial. 🙂 Come on by Dream Crafter for my inspiration and fall ideas!
