A little over a year ago I experienced the scariest day of my life. After a trying infertility battle with years of trying to get pregnant, we had our perfect baby girl. She was only a few months old and we were driving home. I can picture everything still, I kept looking back at her in the rearview mirror through her little mirror on the seat. I did this often, you know — new Mom thing. Only today, she wasn’t making a ton of noise like usual so I found myself peeking at her more often than usual. We were passing through an intersection, when I peeked again and she looked like she was gasping for air. I called her name, literally SCREAMED it, I reached back with my hand and tapped her head to try and get her to look at me in the mirror, nothing. Her face started to turn blue. I swerved over to the side of the road and the next thing I knew I was grabbing her out of her car seat. How I got out of the driver’s seat and to the other side of the car where she was is still beyond me, I don’t remember it at all. I grabbed her out of her car seat and she was limp, lifeless. I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t think, I flipped her to her stomach and just kept hitting her back. The next moment was miraculous, she started coughing a little bit and wailing her little arms. She was fine, she was okay. I was hysterical, I held her tighter than I have ever have held her before, I called Marcus and he couldn’t even understand me because I couldn’t stop crying. All of it happened in a matter of 30 seconds, but it honestly felt like an hour, when I tell the story it seems like forever, but it was no more than 30 seconds from start to finish.
At the emergency room, they ran test after test, monitored her and ruled out the big things they were worried about. It was a long week of testing, worries and everything in between. Ultimately it was determined that her acid reflux (which she had, had for several months before and been on medication for) and (possibly) that angle she was sitting had caused a block in her airway for that moment. When I had pulled her out and flipped her over it helped everything pass.
Great, so we had an answer, but that didn’t give me peace. That may have been the ultimate “conclusion” (really just a strong guess), but it wasn’t a guarantee that it wouldn’t happen again. This is where Owlet changed our lives and I mean this wholeheartedly. I have never believed in a product so much. I could put this little sock on her foot, every night after the incident and sleep more peacefully knowing that it would track her heart rate and oxygen and that it was designed to notify me if either fell outside the preset zones. She actually, just recently stopped wearing it once she hit the end of the age range because it made a big difference for my sanity. Throughout the last almost two years, I’ve recommended it to every, single, Mom with a newborn or who is expecting. I told my sister to get it and she did and guess what? It notified her when her baby’s levels went outside the preset zones and she ran in to find he had gotten out of his swaddle and covered his face with it. It literally notified her, when her needed her the most.
Do you see what I’m saying? It’s a must-have for Moms and Dads. It’s that peace of mind during such an exciting, anxious and terrifying time in our lives.
Well here’s where it gets really good. They’ve made a brand new Owlet Smart Sock 2, just released today! It’s now better than ever (and I really loved it before, so imagine now y’all). Here’s what’s changed on it:
- Improved bluetooth range (up to a 12X increase) between sock and base station

It’s really quite incredible to see how far technology has come along. I can’t even express my gratitude enough for modern technology, for this design, this product that has honestly changed my life. I honestly believe it’s worth every, single, penny, it’s perfect for a shower gift, a new Mom, a second (3rd, 4th, 5th) time Mom and it’s perfect for you. Oh and mine and Blake’s faces happen to be on the inside of the box…soooo….that alone should make you want to buy it. 😉
